Scrisoare adresata autoritatilor belgiene

“I am very sad to officially inform you about the unacceptable behavior of the Belgian Police at Zaventem.

Last Monday, when the passengers disembarked from the plane coming from Bucharest, they were subject to an “impromptu” security check by a number of policemen, who wanted to look into everybody’s passport. No explanation has been given for that action. We all thought that the Police acted on a tip and was looking for someone in particular.

Today, Monday 1st of March, 2010, the procedure was repeated.

When asked about the reason for such behavior, the policemen told us that they are not obliged to give any reason for their action?! I presented my passport indicating that it was diplomatic and that there are general rules regarding the treatment of diplomats. The policeman said “he did not care“?! Moreeover, he retained my passport for … misbehavior. When other passengers, equally revolted by the procedure and the insolence of the Belgian policemen intervined, he pulled my diplomatic passport from his pocket and played with me in an attempt to get it back?!

One time was, perhaps, motivated, but it seems that it becomes a habit! A bad habit, which, in absence of any explanation and politness, can be described as discriminatory and harassing, questioning the quality of Belgium as host country to the European institutions.

Please look into it, because otherwise we, the Romanian members of the European Parliament, would be forced to raise the matter officially in the European Parliament and ask the Romanian authorities to introduce similar special “rules of behavior” for Belgian citizens. All the more so since incidents involving nasty, unwarranted behavior towards the Romanian citizens tend to multiply in Belgian schools, hospitals, administration and other institutions, as other Romanians report to us more and more frequently.

Sincerely,

Ioan Mircea Pascu, MEP, Vice-Chair of AFET”
